The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted a legally binding Convention banning the application of organotin anti-fouling paints on ships’ hulls by 2003 and its presence by 2008. This requires not less than 25 States, the combined merchant fleets of which constitute not less than 25% of the gross tonnage of the world’s merchant shipping, it’s not likely that the Convention will enter into force by 2002. So WWF is seeking commitments from industry and government to show active support for the IMO Convention. This will be achieved through eliminating the use of organotin paints, with action taken to bring about such elimination of the use organotins before 2003, the date proposed by the IMO.

The main qualification for membership in the 2003 Group (organotin-free group) will be that the industry player concerned is fully organotin-free by January 1st 2003. Membership will not be granted to the shipping companies unless their entire fleet is organotin free by 2003.

Organotin compounds, such as TBT, are considered to be amongst the most toxic chemicals ever released into the marine environment. Even at very low concentrations, they have been shown to produce serious negative impacts upon marine life. These cause the disruption of the hormone systems in marine invertebrates, such as dogwhelks, causing fremales to acquire the sexual characteristics of males. Studies show that organotins are present in marine species at all levels of the ecosystem: fish, birds and mammals. Possible human endocrine disrupting properties of organotins have been seen.

Anti-fouling paints on ships’ hulls is a major source of organotins. Organotin paint has been partially banned for use on smaller vessels. This has been shown to reduce levels of organotin, but their continued use on larger ships, and the fact that the compounds can persist in sediments for a lengthy time periodArticle Submission, means that the marine environment is still saturated with these chemicals at unacceptably high levels.

To support conservation of marine biodiversity and reduce destructive human impacts it is imperative that the use of these organotin compounds be phased out. This chemical is considered to be the most toxic chemical ever deliberately released into the marine environment.

Toxic mold disease

Asthma has increased 300 percent in children in the past ten years. Research by WHO, in Germany, finds prostate cancer, breast cancer, and other cancers increasing due to mold-related problems.

Mold is the number one health problem with one in every three persons affected by mold and one in ten with a severe problem related to mold. These can range from the common cold, tonsillitis, otitis, sinusitis, bronchitis, asthma, and pneumonia, to cancer.

Check your home’s humidity levels; buy or borrow a hygrometer and watch the changes in R.H. that occur throughout a typical day in different rooms of the house and over the heating season. To inspect your home for mold growth, winter is the best time except for basements which should also be inspected in the summer. With a flashlight and some simple tools, go through the entire house, both inside and outside, searching for moisture damage and mold growth and their potential causes.

The Stachybotrus species of mold is dangerous; it will start growing in 80 percent humidity but, once established, can grow at 55 percent humidity. This mold can develop from the decay of building materials and is much harder to control. If more than ten square feet develop, it is advised that a professional clean it up. When you see a small speck of mold, that’s only part of the problem – the remainder being inside the walls.

‘Frog Page’ is a manual of the health of the environment and states that frogs are declining because of mold.

Some of the causes of mold are brush and trees within 30 feet of the building; venting the clothes drier inside the home; furniture against outside walls; old fill, causing building movement leading to cracks causing water ingress; concrete will wick up water even to several feet above ground; ventilation not directed outside, such as the kitchen range hood, which should be vented outside; plants and aquariums; drying clothing indoors; standing water, such as keeping cold water in the kitchen sink; hot tubs; using several gallons of water to wash floors.

‘Sick Building Syndrome’ is caused by moisture and mold growth. It migrates through foundations up from the soil. A dehumidifier is not the final answer as it only does the air and not the walls. What is required is a combination of ventilation, circulation, and heat.

Carpenter ants and termites will smell moisture from miles away and they only attack damaged wood.

Ventilation alone won’t help a crawl space. In the summer the vents bring in warm, moist air.

Mold forms on the coldest space. The only
way to deal with it is with heat. Wall heaters with fans are more efficient than baseboard heaters.

Pull furniture and store material away from exterior walls and off basement floors; leave closet doors ajar; leave bedroom doors open as much as possible; undercut doors; don’t block or deflect warm air registers; open drapes, blinds, and curtains; set the furnace fan to run continuously. This will use more electricity but can be offset by installing a two-speed energy-efficient motor; don’t cut off the heating supply or close off unused rooms.

Uninsulated or poorly insulated areas such as exterior corners or foundation walls, should be improved with additional insulation. Be sure to install an air-vapor barrier, usually polyethylene, on the room side of the insulation to prevent hidden condensation behind the insulation. Seal hidden opening into the attic, tighten the attic hatch, weatherstrip and caulk around windows and doors, gasket electrical outlets, caulk baseboards and seal the top of foundations. Using an air conditioner on muggy summer days also helps take out the moisture.

Humidifiers, dehumidifiers, air-conditioning units and filtration systems can be a source of mold growth if they are not regularly cleaned.

Key areas to check for moisture sources leading to condensation inside the home are roof leaks [especially at chimneys, flashings, skylights and eavestroughing]; wall leaks [especially at window and door flashing and sills]; foundation leaks [especially where the ground slopes toward the foundation]; and plumbing leaks [especially at toilet bases and under sink drains].

Check any fuel-burning equipment – furnaces, hot water heaters, boilers, fireplaces, and wood stoves – to ensure that they are venting properly. A blocked chimney could mean that combustion products, including large amounts of water vapor, are spilling into your house. Along with that moisture come dangerous combustion gasses, such as carbon monoxide, which cause deaths every year. Have heating equipment and venting systems checked by a trained service person.

If your moisture remedial work includes extensive air sealing, be sure that all fuel-burning equipment has an adequate supply of combustion air. High efficiency furnaces, for example, have their own air supplies and exhaust fans but conventional equipment may rely on house air for combustion and on ‘natural draft’ to move combustion products up the chimney flue. If starved for air or overpowered by an exhaust fan somewhere else in the house, such equipment can spill combustion gasses indoors. Examples of this include stains near the vent of a gas water heater, smoke entering the room from a wood-burning fireplace or stove, and pilot lights being blown out.

Mold growth often occurs in out-of-the-way areas like closets, corners, walls behind furniture and unused rooms. Increasing air circulation to these areas warms the cold surfaces and lowers local humidity levels.

To solve moisture problems, cover any exposed earth in a crawl space or basement with heavy polyethylene, sealed and weighted-down; slope soil away from foundations to keep basement walls and slab dry; patch any foundation leaks; don’t use humidifiers, unless humidity levels are below 30 percent R.H.; avoid drying firewood indoors; operate bathroom exhaust fans during a bath or shower; use your range hood exhaust when cooking; avoid steam-cleaning carpets in winter; clean mold from wood and gyproc with a 10 percent to 30 percent solution of hydrogen peroxide applied with a spray bottle. This is more effective than bleach and water.

If you use chlorine bleach, mix one part bleach with two parts water and a little detergent to clean nearby surfaces. Leave for 15 minutes and rinse well. Use gloves and protective glasses and good ventilation. Badly mildewed carpets, furnishings and books will probably need to be thrown out.

Molds are parasitic micro-organisms that appear as black, white or multi-colored stain or fuzz. In addition to causing asthma, they can cause other allergies and serious health problems. There are tens of thousand of varieties of molds and are difficult and expensive to identify, even for experts. Health officials recommend eliminating all molds from inside your home.

Most mold spores need condensation or damp materials to germinate and once are established, many colonies generate their own moisture and can continue to survive even under dry conditions. They also need mild temperatures and a source of food, such as house dust or drywall paper.

Now that you are settled back at school it is a good time to think about how you can help the planet by making your classroom and school environmentally friendly. Here are some ideas to get you started:

——————————————————————————–

Start a program to save the trees.

Did you know that paper comes from trees? Take good care of your books and they will last longer so other students will be able to use them. Use your paper carefully. Use the whole sheet (and both sides) of the paper for writing and drawing. Our pencils are made of wood from trees. The pencil will last longer if you press lightly when you write and be careful not to over sharpen the pencil when it breaks or becomes dull. Some desks and furniture is also made from wood products. Be careful not to damage these resources and materials and they will last a long time. If you use paper towels in the washroom use only enough that you need to dry your hands. If you use napkins in the cafeteria, you only need one. What else do you have in your classroom which is made from trees? How many ways can you think of to make them last longer?

Start a program to save energy.

Always turn off the lights if you are the last one to leave the room. Do you use an electric hand dryer in the washroom? Use it only long enough to dry your hands. Do you come to school by car? Why not start a car pool where children in your neighborhood can share rides.

Start a program to conserve water.

Run the water only long enough to wash your hands, when you are finished make sure to turn the tap tightly so the water doesn’t drip.

Start a program to recycle.

Set up a recycle box for the paper you are finished with. Scraps of colored paper can be saved for future projects. When you have enough saved you can be creative with a scrap paper project. If you bring your lunch from home, only bring what you know you will eat. If you eat lunch at a cafeteria only order what you will eat. Wasting food is not good for the environment. Start a recycling program for plastic and metal containers. Have you grown out of clothes that are still in good condition? Pass them on to a brother, sister, friend, thrift shopComputer Technology Articles, or charity.

Penury amid plenty

Who owns our natural … Why the people are so poor and … in rich Lake Victoria … Victoria (Nyanza as called by local people) is the second biggest Lake in the world and the fat

Who owns our natural resources? Why the people are so poor and desperate in rich Lake Victoria Basin

Lake Victoria (Nyanza as called by local people) is the second biggest Lake in the world and the father to Egyptian riches, 40 years ago it had over 320 old fish species; now it possesses only eight species1 It’s basin is potentially the riches region in East Africa and occupied by so poor people, it’s environment in such deep criss1 Why?

The Lake’s resource wealth is further increased by the fact that its soils are among the most fertile in East Africa. The varied and rich cultures of its peoples, its breath taking scenery and abundant wildlife and the thorough vastness of the Lake make it potentially a prime tourism destination.

Factor in region’s capacity for agricultural variety output, industry, hydro- electricity, the gold and other mineral deposit in such places as Tarime, Serengeti, Musoma, Geita and Kahama in Tanzania, and Macalder in Kenya. And again, you are looking at the richest region in East Africa.
Yet,
The people of this great Lake; the Luo, sukuma, Haya, Baganda etc. are among the poorest in the world. Official statistics put poverty level at an average of 49% of East African population. Malnutrition is wider spread, high child mortality, protein deficiency in this protein rich Zone. Add to this, the economy, social and environmental cost of the deadly HIV/AIDS, whose incidence in the Lake world and a stern picture begins to look very sad.

There are many activities taking place daily in and around the lake: agriculture, Fishing, Irrigation, Mining etc. But all in vain! The people remain poor amid all riches; they are yet to enjoy the fruits of being granted with this golden prize. Most are blaming their governments for not implementing effective strategies towards the basin development.

Waste in the Lake Victoria basin is a two-way highway.
*Flowing down into the Lake is the waste and high population generated upstream and taken through by twenty big feeder rivers (10 in Kenya, 6 in Tanzania and 4 in Uganda). All these and other smaller ones drain their contents into the Lake, taking with them the same severe disease.
Untreated sewage from municipalities, rural towns and village, toxic effluent from industries and sediments (which is carried in huge tonnage daily)

All East African countries are the major contributor to the lake pollution but are doing the least about it. Because of lack of sewer, treatment works; largely unregulated agro industries dump untreated effluent into the rivers or direct into the Lake. Pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers find their way into the Lake without forgetting the entire weight of village’s waste, which also rolls down into the rivers ending their journey into our precious Lake. And to crown it all, the water from the lakes is used directly for-domestic consumption.

The fish species have disappeared due to the quality of water in the Lake and around the shoreline, where most of the
Fish would breed in the littoral zone. The water hyacinth, which was first noticed in the late 1980’s, has also been a big threat. And the other reason is the introduction of the Nile Perch (the vocacious carnivore).

*Leaving the basin, flows the regions wealth; for all of it’s problems, however, the lake basin also contains immerse natural wealth. It sustains the largest fresh water fisheries in the world. It’s waters are rich fishing grounds, so rich in fact that the agents of various foreign owned fish processing companies riding daily in fleets with truckloads of the lakes wealth. Landing points are always overcrowded with incoming trucks, leaving contented. On each departure, their trucks are taken with the lakes harvest, belching smokes and fumes of dead fish. Of the huge tonnage from the points around, the local residents are left with the dried skeletons of processed fish for their meals; eating fish by the lake is luxury! There is a lot of money going out leaving the fishermen poor; they sell their catch at throwaway prices because they cannot store it. (Their prices go as down as USD 0.25 per Kg which fetches USD 6 in Nairobi/Mwanza markets after being processed into fillet and at least fetches twice on the international markets).

The regions challenges are enormous; waste and poverty make awful bed fellows and have spawned and evil child; debilitating culture of dependency. Such altitudes indicate the extent to which many feel that they have lost out a stake in managing their own resource. Poor Lake Victoria’ you are no longer the PEAR OF AFRICA.

HOW TO ACHIEVE TRUE HAPPINESS:

Person’s life is full of wealth; gold and all types of minerals are found in MAN. Unless you dig for them, you cannot possess true happiness.

“ Happy are the pure in heart; they will see God” So goes the gospel (Mathew 5:8). Have you ever stopped to think of who decides on your happiness life in the world? Is happiness God made or chance? Can a person create his happiness life? You and you alone are in control of your life direction you can drive your self to true happiness or to rags! But in order to be happy, one needs to concentrate on happy thoughts.
People always ignore the compliments paid to them by others, yet dwelling on unkind words for weeks. They tend to remember compliments for only few minutes or so, but do not forget insult for years. By so doing, you become garbage collector who carries around trash thrown long years ago. You will have to suffer the consequences if you ever allow your mind to be occupied by bad experience.

Remember, you being in control of your own mind (heart), you should make happiness and joy the center of your world. These are always within you; all you have to do is to be sure you are connected with this place inside you. Then build your life around joy.
When you are triumphant, you can be creative because you become open to new Ideas.

For those who were thinking that they could not create their happiness and had given up stresses, I console them and tell them that all is not lost; they still have time to have renovate happiness and be successful if they comply with the following gateways.

*RELAXATION: This is very important for joy and peak performance. As you relax, your metabolism comes into balance. You say yes for the defeat and start afresh, and by so doing you become laid back and happy.
*CRITICISM: This is a useless act, accomplishes not any positive results. Do not do it to yourself or others. Thinking negatively about your self-challenger or other people is the greatest cause of limitations in our lives. Never moan, groan and grouch to any one who will only listen, but do to a person who can do something. Complaining to irrelevant person will only add to your stress.
*NEGATIVE THOUGHTS: This kill, like HIV/AIDS, negative thinking is a killer; it affects the mind, body and emotions. Your thoughts create your physical reality. If you don’t get rid of negative thoughts, expect negative results such as withholding, dislike, poverty, poor image, unhappiness and misery.
*EDUCATION: This like the ocean, it has no end. Educate yourself and be armed with knowledge. Learning is lifelong experience; get it from older people or those who have succeeded and ahead in the game of life.
Read books, newspapers, watch TV, the Internet etc. You still have time for this since it’s the key to good life.
*CARING ONESELF: Love yourself and take care of your body; you live once and for good! Make sure you care for your self if you want to live a long and fulfilling life. It is your own task; no one else can do it for you mind your diet, hygiene and exercise for your physical and mental fitness. Feel and look good by working on your body. Laugh so as to make all kinds of wonderful things happen to benefit your body and mind. Get yourself at ease and be relaxed; the more relaxed the less pain you feel.
*CREATIVITY: Life itself is creation, so this is the best time for you to create whatever creative nature you instead for. Work hard and be contented with your work. Build your family by working hard. Choose a paying and legal carrier, enjoy your work and make sure you are not enslaving your self for working for the sake of money.
*COMPLIMENTS: Pay full attention to the people with huge egos. They always have strong desire for recognition; yet have little concern for those around. They do not give compliments but thrive for!
You should realize that it’s healthy to acknowledge a work well alone. Have a self-respect and integrity and keep your word. Cure all kinds of disease affecting your happiness and harvest best results such as love, caringFree Web Content, good health and success in you life. This relies on your self-ACT NOW.

WILL GLOBAL WARMING CAUSE ANOTHER
NOAH’S FLOOD?

By Arthur Zulu

Man is a very clever animal. For example, he is the only one who knows that the world will end someday, and worries about it. And he is the only creature that can create anything out of a useless thing like ice.

Now, let’s imagine ourselves in a man-made ice theater– floor, roof, and all. We are sitting on chairs made of ice; drinking beer from glasses (made of ice of course), and we are about to watch a play.

What is the play about? The actor, (of course flesh and blood) is going to enter into a mighty cooking pot made of ice. Then he will be covered; and the giant ice cooking pot, suspended by equally giant tripods (made of ice too), is to be
heated by a gigantic fire.

As we the spectators watch to see what happens to the actor, we observe that first, the iced floor begins to crack
as a result of the fire. Then the pot begins to melt, and before we know it, the ice-made glasses on our hands, also begin to melt as a result of the heat.

Suddenly, the roof of the heated ice theater begins to give way and collapse on our heads, and before long, we find ourselves swimming in an ocean of water. So, we the spectators become actors; and birds and all sorts of flying things, become the spectators!

But wait. This is not a play. It is real, and very soon where once used to be our houses, might well become an ocean,
and we all will be swimming for our lives! And if you live in
a coastal city, say New York, London, or Cape Town; you had better start making your ark for another Noah’s flood. But how, you may ask, will this come about?

Over the decades, man has turned up the global thermostat through the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. This has caused climatic upheavals (heavy rain, drought, superkiller winds), and health hazard
(skin cancer).

It has even been speculated that the warming trend could bring about the opposite — global freeze. It happened before in Europe at the end of the Ice Age when a natural warming initiated a phenomenon that shut up the Gulf Stream. Suppose it happens again, and throws us into a deep freeze for say, 2000 years (the previous one in Europe lasted 1,300 years).

What if the former wins out and the polar ice begins a Great meltdown. It has been melting for decades, and several bodies of water have been forming at the Arctic and the Antarctica. And so what?

If you live in Alaska, you will now understand why memorial crosses are collapsing on the tombs in your local cemeteries while the tombs themselves are yawning and displaying their bowels. And you will know why your house is sinking or slanting at a terrible angle, and why your country roads are cracking up.

Even the animals are perplexed as they roam into unexpected lakes (where once used to be ice), and grasslands (where forests once stood). So the marooned polar bear gazing helplessly at the equally marooned countryman knows that the ground on which they are standing is playing games.

Just in case you are skeptical of the global warming trend, you could do one of two things: Find out why ivory gulls are now soaring in the Arctic, the land of polar bears. Or look
up down under and say what caused the gaping holes in Australia.

Yes, there are difficulties in predicting the Greenhouse effect. This is as a result of the roles of some elements –melting ice and snow, clouds, the oceans, volcanoes and solar cycles — in the heating and cooling process of the earth.

But that does not mean that we should take the warming trend as natural, or for granted, because a major climatic change may soon come. Why wouldn’t it come when we continue to burn gasoline and coal without check. Dump the Rio Summit! Forget the Kyoto Protocol! Who cares if a global flood is coming. Let Holland sink. And let Bangladesh go under water. We will all swim!

But not to worry; it may not happen now. It may be the lot of your great great grandchildren, perhaps when the earth had hit 15 or 20 billion. And the little children may find it funny after all.

Imagine 15 or 20 billion dancing boats, with their occupants waving multi – colored farewell flags on a global ocean. Like
a carnival. What a way to exit the planet — the boats become floating coffins; and the ocean their watery graves!

How geen house gases will destroy the earth

Death came swiftly for the Great Julius Caesar on his way to the capitol. And one of his murderers? Brutus, a trusted friend!

Death came swiftly for the Great Julius Caesar on his way to the capitol. And one of his murderers? Brutus, a trusted friend!

If you talk of betrayals, more bizarre things have happened. For even Agamemon — conqueror of lands and of mighty men, was killed by his own wife!

But pity neither Caesar, nor Agamemon. For your best riends are this moment betraying you. They have dug your grave, made out your coffin and are preparing to announce your obituary, even while you are still alive!

But hold on before you dispatch hired assassins to good old Billy, or faithful Penelope, and end up in the dock for first-degree murder. Who are these friends?

They are greenhouse gases. Now, try this experiment. Find a hot corner of the street, park your car there, and shut yourself inside with the windows closed. How do you find the experience?

The car will be terribly hot because while the transparent glass lets the sun’s rays in, it cannot let out the dangerous invisible infrared radiation. You will be killing yourself!

The same story proves true for the earth’s atmosphere which acts like the glass in a greenhouse. It traps the sun’s heat thereby warming the earth. Without it, the earth orbiting in the cold, empty space, would freeze!

But too much of a good thing is bad. The greenhouse gases — our friends which make us warm, are turning into our enemies. Let’s see their dubious roles.

WATER VAPOR
As our friend, it absorbs heat. But as our enemy it cooperates with other gases to sound our death knell.

CARBON DIOXIDE
As our friend, it traps heat and sustains life. But we have produced too much of it that even the plants and the ocean cannot absorb, and the surplus is turning up the earth’s temperature.

METHANE
As our friend, this natural gas is as useful as carbon dioxide. But it has turned into an enemy because we have produced twice as much as we need, and the excess is making it impossible for the atmosphere to disintegrate other dangerous gases.

CFCs
As our friend, when chlorofluorocarbons are in the lower atmosphere, they are efficient heat absorbers. But when they rise up, they become our enemies because they go to destroy the earth’s protective umbrella, the ozone.

NITROUS OXIDE
As our friend, this laughing gas like CFCs absorbs heat when it is in the lower atmosphere. But when it goes up, it destroys the ozone.

OZONE
This gas is our friend when it is in the high atmosphere where it filters deadly ultraviolet radiation, the cause of skin cancer. But when it comes down, it becomes our enemy.

Since these greenhouse gases are being added into the atmosphere daily from the use of fossil fuel, how can the danger of mass poisoning be avoided?

Well, Homo Sapien the smart has already dreamed up solutions:

Man will harness solar power to replace conventional ones.

Man will invent clean burning hydrogen fuel in place of the hazardous petroleum products.

Man will make a gigantic parasol to shield the earth from the sun’s dangerous rays.

Man will reforestate the globe to suck up excess carbon dioxide.

Man will fire up giant laser rays to kill CFCs before they damage the ozone.

Man will use solar power satellites to collect solar energy from space, and send it down as microwaves, or laser beams, for use in place of burning fossil fuels.

Man will …. That’s enough. Thank you man the wise. Clap for yourself!

Let’s hope that you will fix the greenhouse gases before they cover your grave!

The west is in a drought. Along with other measures being recommended or required, we’ve been asked to conserve water. Great. It’s good to conserve. After all, being frugal, dependent on less, and keeping one’s environment uncluttered and unpolluted do far more to enhance quality of life than do frantic consumption and the over accumulation of stuff.

But I have two questions.

First, for what and for whom are we conserving?

The drought has forced many communities to issue mandatory water restrictions. Some have even had to truck in bottled water to meet basic needs. But not everyone is truckin’ in the same direction.

Take Douglas County, Colorado, development capital of the nation, where recently there was some exciting news. Mammoth bones were unearthed at an excavation site. But what was also uncovered was the fact that the frenzied addition of water taps continues unabated. People were encouraged in the reports to contemplate the extinction of the woolly mammals. My guess is that it was early DougCo hominids’ plundering of the mammoths’ water supply to green up acres of proto-bluegrass that caused the beasts’ extinction, not climate change or overhunting.

While we’re dealing with a near-empty glass, developers want to sell more straws. One thing is certain. As water shortages become a way of life, we will be forced to find new water sources. Politicians will wait for the right time to propose it waiting, perhaps, until drinkable water becomes scarce. Then they’ll throw up their hands and “reluctantly” offer a solution: more dams and reservoirs. They know that public sentiment can waffle, but the profit and pressure to continue growth, as well as the need to finance elections, remain constant.

Question number two: “Then what?” After we build more containments, build more houses to suck up any additional water, and confront the inevitable next drought, then what?

We’re driving around on a tire with a slow leak. We could stop and put some air in the tire, but then what? Do we continually refill the tire while the leak gets bigger and bigger? Or do we stop the continuous drain? At least we can find air to fill the tire. Additional containments of little or no water provide little or no long-term solutions. No matter. They represent more major development projects, greased with a little campaign support.

There’s a bigger lesson here, though. Continuing development during droughts demonstrates that conservation on one level may only serve to encourage waste and the exploitive use of resources on another level. Consider that when we recycle, instead of reducing the need for landfills, we might just be opening up more acreage for Wal-Marts and subdivisions. When we push for more public transportation, instead of alleviating congestion, we might just be creating more available volume capacity for land speculators.

The problem may be that we see conservation only as a personal choice or fashion. But to be truly effective, we might have to apply it throughout all levels of society, not as fashionable behavior, but as internalized ethic. We might need to think beyond personal recycling and every-third-day-watering to such notions as conservation of land use, conservation of quality of life, conservation of surface and ground water, and conservation of climate. We might need to value restraint in physical expansion, restraint in personal transportation, restraint in gratification, and restraint in resource consumption.

Do we dare consider freezing the addition of new water taps and making future taps conditioned on sustainable supplies? What a bold notion: to use conservation not to put the squeeze on individuals to cough up resources for industry, but to make our lives easier.

It’s always difficult to draw a line at a particular point, but that doesn’t mean a line shouldn’t be drawn at some point. After all, the west’s land and resources are not unlimited. If we use them upArticle Search, then what? Have we reached the point where we consider drawing that line? While there are still some things left to conserve?

How can we build enchantment into our lives part 2

Thank you for staying with me for this two part article about how our environments add enchantment to every day living. This week I invite you to read about how my Virtual Assistant, Rebecca, put beauty, meaning and form into her home. Her story is different from mine, as each of ours are, but it is the same in the sense that it is her way of building enchantment into her life.

Building Enchantment
By Rebecca Trelfa

I wanted to share a little note about creating enchantment in your home. I recently moved into an
old Victorian house that needs serious redecorating. A previous owner loved dark woods and shag carpets. (Not my style!)

Since I work at home, I found it necessary to temporarily add some enchantment to ‘this old house’ because I spend so much time here. I took down dark drapes and replaced them with sheers to let the light in and, and sanded down and refinished some of the dark wood to give it a lighter appearance.

What a difference! Now I love my new home and am even happier to spend my days here. We have a nice back yard that I plan to plant some flowers and shrubs in once the weather is nice. I have even developed a new interest in Feng Shui and sit glued most nights to the Home & Garden channel watching dreary homes get enchanting face lifts.

I am reminded of an article of Dr. Holstein’s called Positive Spaces, which focuses along the same lines. When you are surrounded by enchantment and things that really reflect your own personality and things that you love, you create new warm memories by bringing out the best of the past.

For example, my love of New Orleans has inspired me to create a Creole-style kitchen and my love of the Caribbean has inspired a soft bathroom with unusual colors. It is so fun to be creative and pull the best from your experiences.

A Play Date with Building Enchantment

You have now read two different accounts of making a house come alive with personal history. Take a few moments to reflect on what you have loved in the past. Was it what you saw on a vacation? Perhaps, actual household items, as I talked about. Perhaps a certain style or time period makes you feel great.

What else would you like to bring into your life … new things … a new home …a garden … new clothes? Perhaps it is nothing physical, but things like more music, or time with friends. Whatever it isFeature Articles, take some time to daydream. Let our stories wet your appetite and give you encouragement to bring more enchantment into your life.

Dear our beloved crying planet…

I read an article last week in “The Gazette”, a local English paper here in Montreal Canada. It was titled “Time is running out” and was written by Peter G. Brown. He is a professor in the school of the Environment at McGill University. Professor Brown emphasized on the fact that “Our survival requires that we fix global warming now and is arguing that the very stability of our civilization is at stake if we don’t address the problem of substantial climate change”. We thank you Professor Brown for enlightening us of the facts of our time.

That is all very well to say, but who really cares enough to listen? I believe no one!

According to Professor Brown “it might take between 500 to 1000 years for a very substantial rise in sea-level to occur, perhaps by 10 meters within that time”. That is not too much time in terms of geological years, but in the human life span, well, it seems like an eternity! I do feel the majority of us do not care because we think we will not be alive to suffer the consequences.

That is a response from many ‘So-Called’ responsible human beings like you and I, and if governments do not seem to care, what can we do as individuals? Not a great deal if we place our priority upon having a six pack of beer and watching the hockey or a football game. Tomorrow is just another day and we are counting the days until we die and become another mere statistic which proves the fact that we have passed through this plane again!!! It is about time that we as a human race waken up and start to see things in the light of reality!

We are too preoccupied with what is going on in the world watching the nuclear arsenal growth in Iraq. However, we do not realize or even care to acknowledge the fact that we are simply waiting to suffocate from a lack of Oxygen in the atmosphere due to the fact that we are already polluting this planet and cutting down trees just to see a bag full of publicity every week on our doorstep, telling us what is on special in the stores this week. That is acceptable for many of us and it doesn’t seem to be the priority of any government who seem to just sit back and accept all the pollution inflicted upon us by Major Corporations, and so on from other different factors.

Well, in such cases we can give a closed eye on a few things when it comes to many politicians. Why not after getting so many donations and lobbying being poured upon them, just for them to be re-elected? We are all going to die anyway, so why not throw a nuclear war? We won’t feel a thing! It is easier and less painful than having an ocean flooding upon us and suffocating us under all the water. With these facts in mind, isn’t it about time that we waken up and start looking at life from a new perspective and with a new attitude?

When we look at our politicians many of them are usually old, and really, why would they care about our environment? They will be dead within few years and they won’t be the subject of pain and suffering when the environment becomes totally unstable, so much that it’s unable to sustain itself and our lives here. If you believe this then think again. You are seriously misled!

In reality, whether you believe this or not, it does not matter. In the universal scale of things, our real purpose on this earth plane is to grow and evolve at a soul level, and yes, we are ALL souls and we are all subjected to the law of Karma. We come here to this plane lifetime after lifetime in order to gain worldly experiences that provide us with our growth. Every single politician, corporate head, and any other decision maker that has contributed towards the destruction of this planet at any point in time, will all be back here to live during that moment of destruction. This will be the cause of their own actions in their previous lifetimes. This will be the case, regardless if it was 20 years, 500 years and even 1000 years later. This might sound severe, and why is this so? Well, it is just not for the fun of it, or for punishment, it is the experience that is required by their soul in order for it to evolve beyond the awful deeds in its past experiences.

Karma deals with the law of cause and effect. Everything that happens to us (effect) has had a previous cause. The evolution of karmic law means that we can be the master of our own destiny. Your karmic lessons in life reflect the qualities that you either lack, or are weak in and are those hindering your success. They indicate experiences or obligations that you have avoided, or were not even aware of, from which you managed to escape in some past life. They now crop up in your present life as obstacles to your success, unless you make a conscious effort to conquer them. Every karmic debt you accumulate in this lifetime will be carried over to the next lifetime in order for the soul to master its own evolution. Perhaps you don’t believe in Karma but considering the sorry state of the human race, isn’t it about time you investigated some other alternatives to the truth of our existence here?

What happened to all those summits where those politicians who stood posing for their famous pictures where they are photographed all together and smiling at the end of the summits? Did anything change after those meetings? Very little changes happened and any which did occur were probably for those things which bear less importance and do not have any effect on any Corporations.

Polluting our planet and someone building a nuclear bomb is practically the same thing. In both ends we are going to die. One is in slow motion and the other is faster. Which one do you choose? Make up your mind, are you choosing death number 1 or death number 2. Well death number 2 is faster and easier than the first one. Don’t you agree?

The one thing that really bothers me in our planet is where are all of these so called religions? How come we don’t hear anything from them? What are their inputs when it comes to the devastating problems that are affecting of our planet? The biggest religions are more preoccupied with against fighting each other in the name of God and claim to be the ‘chosen ones’. Under such circumstances, big governments will make sure they keep fighting each other and in some cases they even support such acts of war as it provides the means for them to do what they are pleased to do. This keeps us all divided and it is easier for them to claim control and power over us when there is no unified voice of the people to speak. Does that seem right to you?

It is in the name of GOD, if you all believe in His or Her existence, that you insist upon fighting each other and have done so for so many years. To achieve what may I ask? In the end, you all have the same GOD but believe in a different messenger. That’s the only difference!! Think about it! Isn’t it GOD who created this planet that we call earth? If you are fighting each other in the name of that GOD then instead of fighting, why don’t you use that energy and effort toward protecting His or Her creation? Isn’t it that more rewarding for our GOD than fighting?

Please take a moment to have some inner reflection if I do not make any sense to you with what I am saying. You all pray to the same creator so why don’t you then sit down and figure out how to save his creation and start making some pressure instead of fighting?

I believe the leaders of all religions should really begin taking responsibility in making some changes. It is time to begin educating their people about truth of the situation. In the event of war, nothing, and I mean nothing will ever be solved. War only succeeds in creating more anger, hate, suffering and children growing up feeling lost, confused and bitter towards life. The only way we will understand this is when GOD shakes us up. Perhaps he might do so by giving us a few earthquakes or why not the odd hurricane or volcano all over the planet, in order us to ‘shake’ us up into seeing sense? Human beings need humiliation to make them stand up on their feet and begin bringing more loving energies and compassion to themselves and their fellow ‘soul mates’.

How many of you know the name of your neighbors? Or, in fact, better than that, how many of us greet our neighbors when we pass them and give them a smile? Not many I’ll bet, but you’ll see, when disaster strikes and if there is a tragic event that hits the whole neighborhood we will not hesitate to ask for help and assistance when we are shaking with fear and suddenly beginning to appreciate life and other people. Only under such circumstances will we ever be thankful enough to realize what we have in our hands. We will greet each other, hug each other and wish each other well for our safety, why not do these things before a disaster strikes? We probably need major disasters to hit every country before we will change our selfish ways. Maybe then we will wake up and face the reality of our existence.

Things really should not have to be made to go to that extreme. It is about time to waken up. We are in a world where our priorities have been tempered with power, greed, money and control. We have witnessed throughout history anything that goes up must come down. It is a cycle of life and no one can tamper with that! Why? A big part of those processes cause humans to become saturated with their greed, ego and pride. That’s a fact of life!

Your voice does matter just get up from sitting in your corner and start caring by taking responsibility for your existence as a part of the human race. You are not just a statistic and you must allow yourself to be heard! This planet is becoming increasingly sicker everyday and it needs your help! Think about it! Life should be enjoyed regardless of all the hurdles that you passed through in your previous life experiences and lessons. Just use these experiences and lessons to your advantage, regardless of how bad they were. In reality your worst experiences are your best assets as they bring more growth. By using your own knowledge to help other people to get over their hurdles is a blessing because you know you have grown to become a better human being.

I am not trying to preach you here for you to join any group, belong to a religion or even convert to spirituality. There are already enough of those groups out there! I do personally believe in what we refer to as GOD. However, GOD to me exists as an illuminated, creative source of energy that brings us love and compassion in order for us to be happy. So I will refer to GOD as the “Great Energy Source”. What I am trying to show you is the awareness and the understanding that we are all human beings here! Perhaps it is hard to believe you are a human being, regardless if you are rich, poor, black, Jewish, Muslim, Christian, or which ever religion you belong to. We are all Souls manifesting in today’s world in the shape that makes us who we are as a unique being in regard to our universal consciousness’ growth. However, as a human being, in reality we are not different from anyone else.

You are here for your growth, in order for us as Souls to reach, touch and be surrounded with that “Great Energy Source”. That source is not far from us, but it is a part of us because it exists within us, as us and at all times. Acknowledge the presence of that “Great Energy Source” inside of us and not outside of us and that way, you will be able to allow the love and compassion to surface into your being for you to see that we are all from the same source and will return to the same source after our life having (hopefully) further progressed in our own evolution as individualsBusiness Management Articles, but under the larger consciousness that is available in the universe that we are all a part of.

Please take a moment to reflect upon and realize your priority in this lifetime. You do have a purpose which should manifest itself in a way by coming back here again to make a change and the difference that is required of you and never doubt that responsibility. This planet needs help and needs you to waken up and realize just what is really going on in the world around you. It is time to make your life worth living!

As the father of a toddler, I am an expert on dirty diapers. I know exactly what to do with them: throw them out!

But along comes a New York waste company and a town in California who want me to do something else with my dirty diapers. Like cover my roof with them. Or walk on them. Or build a doghouse with them, perhaps.

Does this sound nuts? Well, it’s not. In fact, this project just won the world’s top happiness award: the 2003 Happy Guy Award (www.The HappyGuy.com).

A few months ago, we lived in a “vertical community”. When The Little Lady was born, we wanted to expand our home to make room for her, but our neighbors below objected to us digging a basement, and a front porch would have blocked the hall. So we opted to move out to the country, and with that move we had to sacrifice the diaper service and any environmental high ground we could claim.

Yes, we became what we had always wanted to avoid being: diaper-dumpers.

If you have never had children, you may not realize how much a little child can dispose of. In olden days, a couple would have a dozen kids, give or take a few. In these modern times of disposable diapers that just is not possible – the diapers from the first child take up more place on this planet than several dozen siblings would.

So along comes the town of Santa Clarita and Knowaste Inc. proposing to recycle dirty diapers. Sure, you think, just mix them all together, throw in a bit of water, steam them clean and slap them back on baby.

Ironically, the only product that does not seem to be on the list of end uses is diapers. Roofing shingles, sure. Shoe insoles, yes. But not diapers. As I pondered how the world might look if the massive force of dirty diapers was unleashed, it became clear that there could be several big markets. Imagine the pitches …

From Milan and Paris: “Next we have Oo-La-La Picotte strutting her stuff in a lovely ensemble of pure recycled diapers. Notice the fashionable fuchsia on the upper tilt of the collar. This line will be all the rage in parlors and bars this spring.”

From Detroit and Tokyo: “Feel the energy and invigoration. That’s the power of 100% pure recycled diapers under the hood. Go ahead. Kick the tires. Pick your color. And drive away safe in the knowledge that you are being protected by 2000 pound of pure recycled baby poop!”

From Los Angeles: “It’s a smash hit. Dirty Diapers II: The Recycled Story opened in theatres across the country yesterday and immediately claimed the number one spot. What a movie!”

From New York and Toronto: “This just in. Citizens are being asked NOT to hoard dirty diapers. I repeatFind Article, do NOT hoard dirty diapers. The shortage has already slowed the economy by three percent and housing starts have ground to a halt. Please take all your dirty diapers immediately to a drop-off depot. This has been a public service announcement.”

So what will YOU be doing with your dirty diapers?
