Web picture quality knowledge over style over content

FORMATS
bitmap, gif and jpeg. picture formats are commonly used.

I use jpeg format for converting most big pictures, and reduce the dots per inch (dpi) to 70 or below, for a web page.

To keep jpeg file sizes under 50k, I use 30 to 60 on the ‘compression’ scale for jpegs ( a scale runs from 2 as high quality, to 255 for low quality. )

Because many users employ a 256 colour palette, gif’s are still much in use, but they only handle up to 256 colours. I use gifs for icons and small pics.

I use 24 bit colour bmp’s for archiving (I use 300 dpi in case I might print them later), they can be used as a source for both gif and jpeg.
——————————–
THE FORMATS
——————————–
1.bmp (bitmap)
This is a pixel-mapped format. I scan pics at 300 dpi -this is about the maximum for a printer, but too good for the web.

300 dpi 10 by 8 inch pictures, take around 20 megabytes file size. 300 dpi bitmap scans are ideal for archiving, as the place to start processing.

NOTE – Netscape Browser does not appear to handle bmp’s!
—————-

2.gif.

Gif’s are useful for small pics like icons, and also come in ‘animated’ form useful for websites.

Any scanned colour pic should be processed to 256 colour FIRST, then the dpi reduced to a maximum of 72dpi for screen use, then saved as the gif.

The basic colour palette options are (in PhotoPaint) :
‘uniform palette’
– keeps to colours that a 256 colour screen uses. This is good where multiple pics are on one webpage, because the browser might have only those colours to use, (someone correct me if that’s wrong?)

‘adaptive palette’ and ‘optimised palette’
These both select the ‘best’ 256 colours from the picture itself -. Pics done with these options may not look well on pages with many pictures, as the browser page may be limited to 256 colours in total. A picture on its own on a page will look ok.

—————-
3. jpegs (jpg)

The jpeg compression works directly from a 24 bit colour palette if necessary, whereas gifs are 256 colours maximum.

The standard compression method is type 4:4:4 on Photopaint. There is a scale ‘compression’ from 2 to 255. 2 is highest quality, biggest file, 255 is lowest quality, smallest file.

Here are the pic filesizes I got from different compression of a 70 dpi, 10 by 8 inch scan of a full colour (24bit) photograph:

Original bmp file .. appx 20mb
jpg compression 2: 217kb
jpg compression 15: 79kb
jpg compression 30: 51kb ..reccommended
jpg comression 50: 36kb ..reccommended
jpg compression 150: 20kb.

Even the 20kb version was adequate for pictures say up to 5 by 3 inches on an 800 by 600 pixel screen resolution. 30 to 60kb seems a good trade off between file size and quality, but the file size you get relates to the picture composition. This would seem a good range for ‘average’ sized jpg web pictures without noticably losing quality.

—————————–
4. jpg versus gif
gifs are good for icons and small pics – these can be in 16 colours which makes very small files.

jpeg is a compression facility and does not do so well with 16 colour or small pics, unless the compression number is increased. jpeg is really for compressing big pictures, lots of data, 24 bit colour.

With gif you do not get the options for palette selection and compression levels that jpeg gives.

I use gifs for icons and small pics, jpeg for the rest.
——————————

5.Black and white.
For texts, scan textual material in B&W; even if there are colour pics on the page. Separately scan the colour pics, in colour. Black and white is 1 bit not 8 bit – file sizes are much smaller than the equivalent in colour.

I have received text scans in colour – usually the black is grey rather than black. If ‘ocr’ software won’t scan them because the resolution is too low (and it usually is!), I do the next best thing and convert the pic to B&W.; The process usually involves darkening the colour image as much as possible, to increase the blackness of the characters.

Then convert to black and white using the ‘threshhold’ control. This threshhold is just the point at which the analyser decides it is a ‘black’ pixel square, not ‘white’.

The threshhold range is 0 t0 255, in the range from 127 to 220 does the trick, dependent on the colour original, and the allowable extra black ‘dots’ you get if the value is set too high.

File sizes can reduce a text page from 100kb jpg to 20kb gifPsychology Articles, just by going to b&w.; Somehow I prefer gifs for black and white – I feel gifs are better suited to simpler jobs than jpeg.

Make your own computer software without programming

With a new software … the computer … so far rather a … is becoming an everyday … you can do … And you SHOULD do it … no one knows better what you want

With a new software technology the computer software, so far rather a specialty, is becoming an everyday commodity you can do yourself. And you SHOULD do it yourself: no one knows better what you want to get out of the computer than you!

Software development, isn’t that the métier of a few highly trained specialists, the “inaugurated high priests of the computer”? – Not for applications as you need every day. With a new software technology, “component based software development”, also software is going to become a commodity. Make it yourself and you will reap a number of benefits:

1. You get exactly the application software you want – without endless haggling with an external software developer.
2. Your application software will have much more quality and user-friendliness than you could ever get by conventional programming.
3. You save the cost of an external developer.

1st Component Design (http://www.1st-components.com) has developed a product line called “DLG”, specialized in user interface (UIF), that is designed for exactly that purpose. DLG is especially useful for UIF-intensive applications, with a large number of user-interface elements and much user interaction. User-interaction – that’s the most tricky part of application programming.

This economic development, that’s quite natural in history. Starting out as a specialty for a few people. Via to some kind of “high tech” (as computers and software are regarded nowadays). Finally down to an everyday commodity that’s open to the average user.

For example, think of the automobile technology. In the beginning, up to around 1900, an automobile was just another fad for those few who could afford it. By 1908 the Ford “Model T” came on the market, and now that technology turned to something even the average user could master. But still, particularly in Europe, automobiles required a good deal of attention, and many automobile owners hired professional drivers (“chauffeurs”) to handle their cars. Not before the second half of the 20. century more and more people drove their automobiles themselves. Today, handling a car is just too simple to hire a professional “chauffeur” (except for busses, trucks, etc.)

Odds are that software will walk the same road in the years to come. System and standard software will continue to be programmed conventionally by professional software developers. Application software, however, will more and more be “plugged together” by the users (or their applier organizations) themselves.

Building software in an Application Framework like DLG (also called: ‘component based software development’) as a 3-step job:

1.Build a framework by combining DLG elements supporting the features you designed for the target application.

2.Make full use of DLG’s flexibility to override the DLG defaults. You can do it by coding options in form of keyword parameters..

3.Only application-specific operations are left to be programmed in the conventional way. Additionally, there might be details you want to be handled in a more sophisticated way than by the DLG options. If so, you will need to program a number of callback procedures.
Visit http://www.1st-components.com: There you can download many free sample programs (+ their source code) to see that this can be done in a few code lines onlyArticle Submission, even for rather complex UIF-elements.

it.**

Today was another one for me. It seems they
are coming more frequently.**

First: cannot connect to isp. Getting the
message, the computer you are dialing
cannot be found. Funny it was there when
I shut down last nite.**

Shut the computer down and re-start, finally
it hooks up. Oh no none of my sites are
working today. Seems my web host has problems
also.**

Fired off email to web host, but they are not

went belly up.**

I have all my sites with one web host to get
better pricing. Problem is if they are having
problems all my sites are down.**

What if someone clicks on one of my ads and my
site doesn’t come up? What will the think of me,
will they ever click on one of my ads again?**

What in the world can I do? I just opened my
newest site yesterday and it will not open
today.**

Back to my web host, try again same results,
boy I am getting worried. With everyone
closing their doors with no prior warning,
what if they did that to me?**

Decided maybe it would calm my nerves to
write this article. Hope I can write with
all this on my mind.**

It is now 8 pm and my sites are finally
back up. Wonder how many sales I missed?**

Still wonder if I shouldn’t chuck this

Oh heck with it, tomorrow has to be a
better day or I may chuck it out the window.**

Speeds explained

So how fast is your internet connection anyway? Yeah, I know
that many companies now (especially DSL – for more information see
http://www.internet-tips.net/System/DSL.htm, and cable) are advertising
speeds of upwards of a megabit or more. Well, what does that really mean?
And how fast is 56K or 28.8 anyway?

I know this is hard to believe if you’re relatively new to the world of
computers or the internet, but back in 1978 modems were running at 110 or
300 bits per second (the technical term is baud). The table below is not
precisely accurate but gives a rough idea of how the speeds have been
working their way upwards for the past few years.

Speed Timeline

1978 100 to 300 baud
1988 1200 to 2400 baud
1993 14,400 baud
1995 28,800 baud
1997 33,000 baud
1998 56,000 baud
1999 1,500,000 baud DSL and cable mode connections

In comparison, local network connections run at 10,000,000 bits per second
at least and it is becoming more common for these to be running at 100
million bits per second.

But what does all this mean? Well, a character is eight bits (a bit is a
zero or a one, and it takes 8 of them to make a single character). The
letter K means 1,024, so a 28K modem is 1,024 times 28 or 28,672 bits per
second (also called bps).

Now divide the 28,672 by 8 and you have the maximum number of characters per
second that your modem can run at. This works out to 3,584 characters per
second, which in today’s world is considered pretty slow (you will
understand why shortly).

Interesting fact: Modem speeds are all standardized by International
Telecommunications Union (ITU). The ITU defines 28.8K bps modems as v.32 and
33.6K bps modems as v.34.

All right, now you are getting 3.5 thousand characters per second, if you
have a 28K modem, right? Well, not exactly. First off, the quality of your
phone line may drop that down significantly. What happens is your computer
sends some data to the “internet”; it is received but there was an error, so
the internet computer requests that the data be resent. The worse the
quality (you can hear how bad it is by the amount of static you can hear
when you listen on the line) the more times the data has to be resent, the
slower the line.

On top of that, there is a certain amount of overhead associated with each
connection. This is “handshaking”, which means the modem is asking the
internet computer if it got the data and the internet computer is responding
“yes” or “no”. There is also a certain amount of data to define what is
being sent (an email or a web document or whatever) which eats into the line
speed.

Well, okay, let’s assume you are actually getting 20K from your 28.8K modem.
There’s worse news to come. The internet has lots of things that actually
have nothing to do with content. There are cookies
(http://www.internet-tips.net/Security/cookies.htm), advertising banners,
comments, web bugs (http://www.internet-tips.net/Security/webbugs.htm), and
a host of other things inserted into your web experience. A typical
advertising banner is 7.5K, which in our 20Kbps example requires several
seconds to load to your machine.

What can you do? FirstFree Web Content, if you can get a DSL or Cable modem connection to
the internet. It will probably cost about the same or only slightly more
than your dialup connection and will improve your surfing experience by many
times.

Second (or if you cannot get a higher speed connection) get an ad blocker
(http://www.internet-tips.net/Security/adblocking.htm) installed on your
system to remove those ads before they are downloaded to your machine. Why
even bother downloading banners that you are never going to look at anyway?

I hope that helps clear things up a bit.

Troubleshooting microsoft word

… there are five things you need to … in order to … and fix most of your Word … Word stores most of its format settings in a global template called … 2

Basically, there are five things you need to understand in order to troubleshoot and fix most of your Word problems.

1. Word stores most of its format settings in a global template called normal.dot.

2. Word has a Startup folder, which holds add-ins that start automatically when Word is launched.

3. Toolbars and macro settings are recorded in a Registry key called “Data”.

4. Proofing Tools, like the spell checker and grammar checker, are stored in a Registry key called “Proofing Tools”.

5. Within a document, paragraph formatting is stored in the paragraph marker at the end of that paragraph.

So, let’s talk about Word crashes, out of memory errors, freeze-ups, and blue screens of death. How do we know where the problem is originating and how to fix it?

If Word is not launching for you at all or is crashing or freezing as soon as it comes on the screen, odds are your global template has become corrupt or something is loading automatically in your Word Startup folder that is misconfigured or corrupt. To see if it’s a corrupt global template, go to your Start button and click on Run. In the Run box, type “winword.exe /a” (without the quotes, but WITH the space). If Word launches OK, then it probably is your normal.dot file that is bad (since this switch launches Word with a clean, empty template). To get yourself a new, uncorrupt template, simply close Word and search your computer for normal.dot and rename or delete it. When you launch Word again, it will look for normal.dot and if it can’t find it, it will create a new one. If this does NOT cause Word to launch correctly, then you need to look inside Word’s Startup Folder and see if there are any add-ins in there that could be causing the problem. This folder is usually located at C:Windows Application data Microsoft Word Startup (Or if you run Windows 2000 or have multiple Windows profiles, look in your user profile or all users for your application data folder. Or, if all else fails, search your hard drive for startup and you will find it.) If there are any files in there, move them all to another location and see if Word launches. If it does, then move the files back one at a time until you find the culprit.

If Word launches fine, but crashes or freezes when you perform some function like making text bold or hitting the Print icon, it is possible your registry’s data key has become corrupt. The Data key stores a lot of your toolbar and macro settings. To fix this, you must close Word and edit the registry as follows:

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0 Word. (Note: the 9.0 refers to Word 2000, if you use Word 97, you will see 8.0 and Word 2002 is 10.0) Inside the Word folder, you will see a folder called “Data”. Delete this Data folder and relaunch Word. Just like with the global template, Word will look for this Data folder and recreate it fresh if it can’t find it.

(If you do not know how to locate or use the Registry, you can go to my Registry page for instructions, but be warned that editing the Registry is something to be taken very seriously and can render your computer unusable if you mess up. So, pay close attention to the instructions on my page for backing up the Registry before you edit it and know that YOU are liable if you make a mistake. Instructions are here: http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/registry.htm )

If Word works well until you try to use the spell checker or grammar checker and either of these cause your computer to freeze up or crash, or if the spell checker is grayed out in your Tools menu and you cannot get it to work, the problem could be with the Proofing Tools folders in your Registry. To fix this, go back in to your Registry Editor and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftShared ToolsProofing Tools. In this Proofing Tools folder, you will see four subfolders: Grammar, Hyphenation, Spelling, and Thesaurus. Just delete the folder that is causing problems and relaunch Word and it will again create a new one for you.

Now, lets say Word works fine most of the time but in one particular document, every time you try to print or browse past a certain point, Word locks up or crashes. This is an indicator that there may be corruption within one of the paragraph markers or in the final paragraph marker of the document. To display your paragraph markers, look for the icon on your Standard toolbar that looks like a paragraph marker (or a backwards P) and click on it. This will show the paragraph markers at the end of each paragraph or wherever you hit the Enter key to drop down a line. Highlight the paragraph marker at the end of whatever paragraph you suspect to be corrupt and delete it. This will remove any special paragraph formatting that was applied to that paragraph and remove the corruption with it. If your entire document appears to be corrupt (fonts are all screwy or graphics are displaying strangely or it is giving you sporadic error messages), the best way to try to save the data is to highlight all of the document EXCEPT the final paragraph marker and copy it and paste it into a new blank document. A large percentage of document corruption is stored in the final paragraph marker in a document and sometimes just putting it into a new document and leaving that paragraph marker behind fixes it.

Of course, there are rare occasions where none of these fixes actually fix your problem, so you may have to uninstall and reinstall Word. If you have Word 2000, you can go to the Help menu and run Detect and Repair and this will fix many problems. If you can’t get into Word at all, you can go to your Windows Control Panel and double-click on Add/Remove Programs and double-click on Microsoft Office in this list and you will see an option to repair Office. Both of these require the Office CD to complete. However, if this still doesn’t cure your problem or if you are using Word 97, which does not have Detect and Repair, you will have to uninstall and reinstall. Notice that I said to uninstall first because problems of this severity are rarely fixed by simply reinstalling the application over top of itself. And, another thing to know about Microsoft Office programs is that uninstalling them does not completely remove them from your system, so if the part of the program that was causing the problem has not been removed by uninstalling, it will still exist after reinstalling. To avoid this, Microsoft offers free downloadable Eraser Utilities to completely remove Office from your computer. I highly recommend you run the proper eraser after you uninstall and before you reinstall in order to guarantee a clean install. There are links to the Eraser utilities for both Office 97 and Office 2000 at my Office page: http://www.personal-computer-tutor.com/office.htm

I hope this helps you with your troubleshooting needs. Though Word is a great program, when it’s bad, it’s veryFree Web Content, very bad.

Help i cant handle one more virus

“There are 500 new … created each … to the … website. Whenever I learn outabout another virus or worm that has … into … high” status, I shake my head

“There are 500 new virus/worms created each month”,
according to the McAfee.com website. Whenever I learn out
about another virus or worm that has developed into “medium
or high” status, I shake my head in disgust. Have you ever
wondered what would happen if that virus programmer turned
their energies around and instead developed a positive
program for us to use? Can you imagine how terrific that
program would be?!?!

If you haven’t heeded the latest slew of virus warnings then
you’ve probably been hit with a virus or worm. It’s likely
you’ve also lost use of your computer for at least a few
hours if not a few days. In some cases, you’ve lost very
important computer files or programs, too. Take some steps
today, so that you’ll have a virus free year.

Now every anti-virus website tells you to not open
attachments from people you do not know. The thing is, that
even attachments from people you love, could infect your
computer with a virus. I’m going to come clean and admit the
truth. I too have had a virus wreak havoc on my computer –
ONCE! And once since April of 1994 was enough for me!
Actually it was a beautiful attachment of fireworks that a
friend sent me. Well, it looked like fireworks before it
destroyed some of my Word documents and other programs!

So, I won’t tell you to not open attachments. That’s a crazy
suggestion anyway. Instead, take the time now, right now,
this moment, to protect your computer.

~Most new computers come with an anti-virus program and

time you receive your computer. Locate the anti-virus
program on your computer, get on the Internet and download
the latest .dat (data files) or zip files (large group of
files compressed so they download quickly).

~If you don’t have an anti-virus program, test drive one of
the many programs available on a 30-day trial. Purchase a
program that offers an automatic scheduler feature and set
the system to update files once a week.

~The most popular anti-virus programs are McAfee and Norton,
however there are many other programs available*.

Kids computing is like “electronically sugar-coated ‘learning’ that may spoil children’s appetite for the main course.” Encouraging children to “learn” by flitting about in a colorful multimedia world is a recipe for a disorganized and undisciplined mind. Kids should be encouraged to blossom and flower in a free atmosphere. Their development should be in their own capacities. Barry Sanders, Professor at Pitzer college, US says “good readers grow out of good recites and good speakers.” Then, as a child matures, his success in reading and writing nurtures his “innermost, intimate guide, the self.” So any threat to language and literacy may limit children’s “inner voice” – their capacity to tell themselves stories and talks themselves through academic or other problems. Those who place their faith in technology to solve the problems of education should look more deeply into the needs of children. The renewal of education requires personal attention to students from good teachers and active parents, strongly supported by their communities. It requires commitment to developmentally appropriate education and attention to the full range of children’s real, low-tech needs — physical, emotional, social, and intellectual development.

So, Beware, Be Aware, Brainstorm to activate the mind cells before its too late!!!

Computers are reshaping children’s lives, at home and at school, in profound and unexpected ways. Common sense suggests that we consider the potential harm, as well as the promised benefits, of this change. To put it simply, childhood is our species’ evolutionary edge. Childhood takes time. And many children are simply not being given the time to be children. Computers are acute symptoms of the rush end childhood.

Children need stronger personal bonds with caring adults. Yet powerful technologies are distracting children and adults from each other. They need time for active, physical play; hands-on lessons of all subjects, especially arts and language. Experience the nature. This is essential for healthy child development to flourish in free atmosphere. Yet many schools and parents opt for Computers distracting the child reading and cutting the minimal offerings in developing areas to shift time and money to expensive, unproven technology! Researchers reveal Computers pose serious health hazards to children. The risks include repetitive stress injuries, eyestrain, obesity, social isolation, and, for some, long-term damage to physical, emotional, or intellectual development. Our children thrive to spend even more time staring at screens increase sight problems. The social and educational need of the low-income children is at stake too. Quite obvious, the drive of Computerization emphasize only one of the human capacities – analytical and abstract thinking of child develops late but it aims to jump start prematurely! Computers are the most sophisticated thinking tools ever designed. They were developed with adult bodies, as well as adult mental capacities, in mind. Even for adults, their intensive use is related to job stress and serious injuries. But emphasizing computers for children, whose growing bodies are generally more vulnerable to stress, presents several challenges to healthy development. The current focus on computers can distract schools and families from attending to children’s true needs, and can exacerbate existing problems.

The computer, like the TV, can be a mesmerizing babysitter. But many children, overwhelmed by the volume of data and flashy special effects of the World Wide Web and much software, have trouble focusing on any one task.

Must five-year-olds be trained on computers today to get the high-paying jobs of tomorrow?

For a relatively small number of children with certain disabilities, technology offers benefits. But for the majority, computers pose health hazards and potentially serious developmental problems. Of particular concern is the growing incidence of disabling repetitive stress injuries among college students who began using computers in childhood. The National Science Board reported in 1998 that prolonged exposure to computing environments may create “individuals incapable of dealing with the messiness of reality, the needs of community building, and the demands of personal commitments.”

Physical health

Emphasizing the use of computers in childhood can place children at increased risk for repetitive stress injuries, visual strain, obesity, and other unhealthy consequences of a sedentary lifestyle. Some development experts also warn that increasing the time that children spend on computers, given the hours they already sit in front of televisions and video games, may contribute to developmental delays in children’s ability to coordinate sensory impressions and movement and to make sense of the results. That could in turn lead to language delays and other learning problems. This health hazard demands immediate attention but its only a concern as every person is in a ‘Computer rat race!’

Muscular-skeletal injuries

Long hours at a keyboard, constantly repeating a few fine hand movements, may overtax children’s hands, wrists, arms, and neck. That, in turn, may stress their developing muscles, bones, tendons, and nerves. For the user, the computer is a kind of straitjacket into which the body must adapt itself. The eyes stare at an unvarying focal length, drifting back and forth across the screen. Fingers move rapidly across the keyboard or are poised, waiting to strike. The head sits atop the spine balanced, in the words of one physician, like a bowling ball. Built for motion humans do not respond well sitting nearly immobile for hours at a time. Children who play games on computers for long hours, fight with the ctrl keys, jump with space or run right-left or topsy-turvy through the arrow keys are sure to freeze with vision, pain in hands and more! There may be greater risk. That’s because their bones, tendons, nerves, muscles, joints, and soft tissues are still growing.

Vision problems

Computer is a strain on child’s eyes and developing visual system and actually makes learning to read, a more complication. Eyestrain experienced by computer operators is related to screen glare and to the screen being either too bright or too dim compared to the ambient light. Maintaining a constant focus on the same distance, at the same angle, inhibits blinking even more than does reading from a book, probably because the monitor presents a vertical reading surface and because our eyes are open wider, making it more of an effort to blink Children or adult, all face visual fatigue from long spells on computer screen. Expecting beginning writers to poke a letter key and then passively watch a letter appear on a screen can be hard on their eyes and an extra perceptual challenge, and thus may actually hamper the process of learning to write and read. Their muscular and nervous system are in developing process too. It’s not until about the age of 11 or 12 that their capacity to balance and coordinate the movement and the focusing of both eyes together is fully mature. A pair of glasses may correct the immediate problem. But myopia itself may be a risk factor for other visual problems. It can interfere with children’s sports activities and enjoyment of nature, and even limit their choice of career

Lack of exercise and obesity

Many health professionals believe childhood obesity has increased lately in large part because children spend more time sitting in front of electronic media and less time actively playing, at home and school, and because they consume so many high-fat, high-sugar foods and junk stuff. Be it a television or Video game or Computers, children have found their way into modern technology with a bang. Children are prone to diabetes, a higly risk factor due to obesity and reports say may American children are on rise to diabetes. Lack of exercise is major problem as children are at loss of time divulged into many activities. Classroom learning is soon getting bookish and mugged up lessons.

Isolated lives

Many parents have become active with spending less hours of time together with the child than the earlier years. With the recent surge in the purchase of home computers, laptops, and home connections to the Internet, as well as school connections, children are likely to spend even less time interacting face-to-face with parents, teachers, and friends. Television and Personal Computers are in every kid’s bedroom. The latest fad is gifting of Personal Computer on his birthday! Recent study estimates that children between the ages of 10 and 17 today will experience nearly one-third fewer face-to-face encounters with other people throughout their lifetimes as a result of their increasingly electronic culture, at home, school or classes. Many kids have started living isolated lives and disappear into their rooms to spend most of their time with this wonder technology media. Socially, the kids are cutting themselves out and lack the little courtesies and emotional attachments.

Less self-motivation

Many girls find Computers boring or creative whereas boys plug on to playing more games. Young students often seem to be mesmerized by, and some even addicted to, the action on their screens, rather than motivated to learn. A fascination with technology, Researchers caution, is not the same thing as a motivation to learn about educational subjects beyond the technology itself. Some mesmerizing educational soft wares may be more entertaining that education.

Stunt imagination

Less creativity has crept into the classroom with replacing of computer skills. Creative work draws on a child’s own inner resources – including originality, playfulness in generating ideas, and vigor and perseverance in carrying them out. Similarly, imagination involves the capacity to bring to life pictures of one’s own in one’s own mind. Children who are exposed to a heavy electronic diet of television, the Internet, video games, and multimedia are bombarded with ready-made images, often cleverly animated and quickly swapped with a point and a click, literally leaving nothing to the imagination. Entertained constantly and effortlessly, they are at loss of their imagination and find harder to generate their own images and ideas. Their limitation is up to the visual effects on their minds of the television, video game or computer.

Impaired Language & literacy
The time spent with computers and other electronic media may distract both children and adults from directly communicating with one another, face to face, weaving together the rich variety of spoken and unspoken cues such interactions encourage. That, literacy experts warn, may place children at risk of language delays. In addition, too few chances for such communication, if extended throughout childhood, may permanently limit children’s ability to express them in speech or in writing, to comprehend fully what they read, and even to understand. They are at loss to think logically and analytically. Before their vocabulary is built, kids are spoon feed to computers.

Moral Behavior & Emotional competence

The most important gift that parents can give a child to spur their mental development, is not a good education, elaborate educational toys, or summer camp, but time – regular, substantial chunks of it spent together doing things that are naturally appealing to the child. Dr. Stanley I. Greenspan, the former director of the Clinical Infant Development Program at the National Institute of Mental Health, warn that an emphasis on computers in childhood exacerbates the tendency for our increasingly rushed and impersonal culture to harm the emotional development of children. And that, they add, will take a toll on their intellectual, social, and moral development as well, because emotions guide human learning and behavior.Flooded commercialization ads on television, internet and hoardings call for attention as kids are exposed to not only games, child products but also drugs, pornography etc. Sites like mamamedia.com, sesamestreet.com and icanbuy.com make available targeted banner campaigns and desktop wallpaper downloads that emotionally effect the kids. They are children who are unable to cope with the slightest of frustrations, and lash out aggressively. They are entitled, demanding, impatient, disrespectful of authority, often disapproving of their peers, unempathetic and easily “wounded.” Their numbers are increasing. We must take note of this disturbing trend and intervene with some urgency if we are to raise children who will care about others in society.

To sum up, these are our fundamental beliefs and concerns

* Childhood is a critical phase of life and must be protected to be fully experienced. It should not be hurried

* Each child deserves respect as an individual. Each needs help in developing his or her own unique capacities and in finding ways to weave them into a healthy social fabric.

* Children today are under tremendous stress and suffer increasingly from illnesses such as allergies, asthma, hyperactive disordersFree Reprint Articles, obesity and depression. This stress must be trim down.

HOW TO GET THE COMPUTER YOU WANT WITHOUT SPENDING A FORTUNE

By M. Nasser Bey

I have been using computers for years now and have never owned a new one.
Like many people I had little money when I started looking for a machine.
Back in the early 90’s when I got my first machine most new ones were way
out of my league in terms of cost, it was then i decided to try to get a used machine.

Early on; many used machines that I could find were from colleges and companies that were upgrading. These organization may have had contracts to buy new machines every year or two and so they just gave the machines away or tossed then in the trash in some case.

I started my search for a good used machine at the libray in the magazine stacks looking for computer magazines that listed used resellers. I found several and sent for infomation which usually meant a catalog. After saving money from my business I got my first used Macintosh in 1995, it was an old Mac SE. As time went on I found I needed software and internet access.

Using the software on the machine I began reading “readme” files on somthing called Gopher Space which was and still is a precursor to the web for file searches. Using a program called gopher I began locating free software all over the world. Other sites like JUMBO.com and DOWNLOAD.com provide unregisterd copies of software I still use, if you can stand the message asking you to register everytime the program comes up it can be a pretty good deal.

As I began to build my small business I found it was useful to conduct trades of services for the things I needed instead of buying. One program I traded for was a Desktop Publishing program, that led to me offering ad space in the publications I created. I was able to trade services with several internet service provides for free internet access long before free access was being given away by the big guys. I have found that some Non-profit organizations give free internet access to people who provide information on the net, check the organizations in your area, if you find one that provides this service, tell them that you are an INFORMATION PROVIDER and fill out their forms. They will send you the software you need to go online. Just don’t abuse their service by spamming anyone or you will get yanked!

I was able to locate much of the software I have been using in used bookstores since many such store have used computer how-to books and in the back of these books there are CD’s or
packs of disks. some of it is out of date and unsupported but still very usable to go online or perform other tasks like writing or web browsing.

Over the years I began trading advertising space for more used computers, getting an entire system, a Mac IICx and 21 inch monitor for advertising space! Later I needed better systems and began looking around for where to get them , then I discovered Ebay (http://www.ebay.com), after a conversation with a business contact. I began searching for what i needed and found that timing my bids in a certain manner often assured my winning the bid on the need equiptment.

I was able to bid on software and hardware that would have cost me hundreds more at retail.
To date I have about $5000 worth of equiptment and software that cost me less than $1500 to buy! You might say why bother looking for used stuff when new cost so little?

My answer is that you may not always need new stuff if some of the older stuff
will do. Take computers. I am now using a five year old Mac Power pc with 34 megs of ram and system 8.1, I use it mostly to web browse and desktop publish. I use a 56k modem too.

The processor on this machine is 90mhz, properly configured the machine brings my web pages up rather quickly, my mail downloads are quick aswell, both the machine and the 21 inch color monitor I use are used and work very well and have cost far less than new!
For alittle effort and some sound research you too can save money and have a good system, If however you are one of those people who has to have everything new than God bless you and go right out and get what you need. I have never paid retail for a computer related item and never will. Bartersites and trade sites of every kind are turning up on the net, just go to any browser search engine and type in BARTER or EXCHANGE OF SERVICES or AUCTION and COMPUTER Free Web Content, you are bound to find what you want for much less than full price. Once you start getting what you want in a computer for less you will wonder why you did not do this sooner.

Never pay for anything you can barter for.

Today ofcourse you can get a free computer from a big online provider or other company if you are willing to sign up for internet service for a year or more in some case and endure a mountain of advertising on your browser. Just go to any search engine and type in FREE COMPUTER. My own site at http://mnbey.freeyellow.com has links to bartersites and message boards to post your needs to. Good Hunting.
