investing wisely or working a 9 to 5 job, or starting a
business.

Play along with me for a minute.

Let’s just say that you stumbled across a message
hidden in a book in the attic of your grandmother’s
house that tells you about a treasure chest filled with
gold and precious gems valued at over $1,000,000.

Now, the message tells you that this treasure is buried
under a rock, three yards north of an apple tree, in an
orchard, behind an old gray barn, a half mile west of a
big white house, on a dirt road, five miles east of
Anytown in Anystate in Anycountry.

You have never been to Anycountry. You have never
been to Anystate. You have no idea where Anytown is,
let alone finding a big white house, a barn, an orchard
etc. But you know that Grandma never lied, right? So
it’s really out there.

How quickly would you buy a map?
How fast would it take you to gas up the car or buy a
plane ticket?
How would you come up with the time or money to
make the trip?

You see, it’s all about commitment and belief. You
believe Grandma and you’re committed to finding the
treasure chest!

The Internet has provided us with a treasure trove
of opportunity. Taking the journey, however, requires
that kind of commitment and belief.

Possibilities abound out there in cyberspace just
waiting for you.

Yeah, but . . . ? Do you suppose that Bill Gates
succumbed to the “yeah buts.?” Where would we
all be if he had?

Before you even think about a business.
Before you start toying with domain names.
Before you rush to point and click to buy a web site.

Ask yourself the following questions:

Do I believe the treasure chest is out there?
Am I willing to focus, commit and do whatever
it takes to find it?

If you answered yes to these two questions, you’re
ready and I wish you Godspeed!

When asked to write a small piece pertaining to ethics
and integrity in the business world, my first inclination
was to draw on personal experience.

Everyone has bad experiences to relate. We deal with
a business, determine that we were treated shabbily therefore that business has no integrity. Or perhaps we disagree on the implementation of a refund, hence the business or owner has no ethics.

Rather than using ethics or integrity to describe business practices, a better definition might be “character”.

My dusty old copy of Webster’s New World Dictionary provides the following definitions for use in this context:

>ethics…the study of standards of conduct and moral judgment; moral philosophy.

>integrity…the quality or state of being of sound moral
principle; uprightness, honesty, and sincerity.

>character…an individual’s pattern of behavior or personality; moral constitution. moral strength; self-discipline, fortitude, etc. reputation.

If you will look at these definitions you can see that ethics relates to standards of conduct. Period. Ethics are…no good or bad comes into the mix. Integrity either is or isn’t. Sound moral principle is relative to the observer or end user.

It stands to reason, therefore, that the best measure of good or bad practice falls to basic “character”.

Okay, so what does all of this have to do with business. Well, I wish I had a nickel for every time someone has asked me the following questions:

“How do I tell if a business is good or bad?”
“How do I know where to shop?”
“Are they a good business?”

My response is always the same…check the fruit on the tree. What is the pattern of behavior? What is the company’s reactive personality? Is the moral constitution flexible rather than rigid? Check the reputation.

The offline world provides numerous resources to determine the patterns and trends of businesses. Trade associations, chambers of commerce, better business bureaus etc.

In the online world, however, we are still treading murky waters when it comes to measuring the “character” of a business. By far, the best route to take are testimonials.

Testimonials on your website are powerful. But, they must be honest and sincere. Don’t just make them up. Add a link back to the provider and it will increase your credibility TENFOLD!

Now I know what you’re thinking, “Who wants to be answering tons of email for ME?” Nobody. That’s why you use the technology available at your fingertips. With the permission of the author, use a line or two of their testimonial on your site with a link to an autoresponder for the full message.

With today’s economy, more and more companies are finding themselves
faced with the situation of having to reduce headcount to remain
competitive. Here are five key factors to consider when selecting
an outplacement firm if your company is ever faced with a workforce
reduction.

1. Types of Services Provided.

One decision you will need to make regarding outplacement is whether
your displaced workers would benefit most from group or individual
one-on-one outplacement. For the majority of outplaced employees,
if your budget permits, individual outplacement is the preferred
option since it provides one-on-one support that will help them move
forward more quickly than they would on their own.

If you decide they would benefit most from individual outplacement,
you will then need to determine what services would be most valuable
to your displaced employees. One option would be to select an
outplacement firm that develops their resume and cover letter for them.
Another option would be an outplacement firm that offers office space
and a computer for the displaced worker to prepare their own job
search materials.

2. Areas of Specialty.

Another factor to consider when selecting an outplacement firm is
whether it is important to you that they have experience working with
the type of displaced employees you will be sending them. A related
factor is whether it is important to you that the outplacement company
specializes in dealing with companies like yours.

If their areas of specialty are important to you, review the
outplacement company’s web site and other marketing materials to see
what their specialty is or ask them directly. If an outplacement
firm’s expertise lies in serving large companies displacing
administrative staff and your small business is displacing experienced
managers, this outplacement firm may not be the best fit for you.

3. Experience with Current Job Search Practices.

How important is it to you that the outplacement firm be experienced
with Internet job search techniques? Is it likely that the Internet
will play a key role in your displaced employees’ job search strategy?

If you determine that Internet savvy is an important evaluation point
for an outplacement firm, check to see whether the outplacement firm
recognizes the importance of the Internet by having a web site. Are
they aware of the top online career sites? Do they offer a service to
post displaced employees resumes on these top online career sites?
Do they have the ability to distribution resumes electronically to a
select group of employers and recruiters?

4. Length of Time Support is Provided.

Another factor to consider when selecting outplacement services is the
amount of time you feel the displaced worker would require outplacement

By considering each of these five factors you can develop effective

In the end, what these million dollar CRM systems do or donot do, matters little to small businesses. The price tag istoo high for most.

Is “Personalization” The Useful Part?

The better approach may be to look at some aspects of CRM tosee what can be done with software on our website to provide ourvisitors and customers with a more pleasant and enjoyableexperience. It may help to exit the CRM derby, stroll down arelated path, and think of only part of it: personalization.

Neat things flow forth from this orientation. For example,maybe invite visitors to check on things new since their lastvisit. Or on specials for the day, specifically tailored to this visitor in some way. Or when a customer clicks a form to reorder, fill the entry fields with data provided earlier. A great time saver for the customer, something they willappreciate. Simple, effective things such as these can beabstracted from CRM models at modest cost.

Large Scale Models

Large firms with bucks to burn can make personalizationcentral to a new kind of website. At a minimum, each page canaddress the visitor by name. At the extreme, the entire site can be presented according to previous information collected about this visitor. For example, if the visitor has kids, and a appropriate new product is available, it can be offered. And not offered to another visitor without children.

Building a website on the fly is a bit heavy for a smallbusiness. The coding challenge alone is heavy. The price tagfor software is high.

Still, a small business can implement simple ideas assuggested above. And more will spring from these.

For Starters

As a fellow into site performance and promotion, I’m alwaysleery of anything that may annoy a visitor. Hits are so hard toget, there’s just no point in inviting anybody to leave. So I’mvery concerned about any technology that risks turning visitorsaway.

I used a Pentium II PC for almost two years. Beginning abouta year back, some sites would not allow me to visit because Ididn’t have the latest and greatest. Maybe the giants can getaway with this, but a small business can not afford to lose evenone visitor.

In most cases, the reason I could not visit was that mybrowsers could not handle the trick JavaScript in place. I’ve a new system now, just 4 months old. A couple of days back I ran into a site that told me my software is out of date.

I have the latest versions of Internet Explorer and Netscaperunning. That is, the latest what work. (I couldn’t get IE 5.5to stop locking up my new system. And I don’t know of anyone whohas Netscape 6.1 running yet; I couldn’t make it work.)

To exclude any visitor because of the way a site is puttogether or the technology used, makes no sense to me at all. A small business can not afford this risk.

Let’s Keep It Super Simple

Your site must seek to embrace all visitors, regardless oftheir software or hardware. So what is needed to make suchsystems work is a very simple recognition procedure. It might go like this.

When a visitor arrives, put up a page in straight HTML,without any bells and whistles that would break even olderbrowsers. (My wife still uses Win 3.1 on a 486, and won’t eventalk of upgrading.)

Once the page is loaded, try running a brief JavaScript tocheck for a cookie. If the script fails, fall back and displayonly HTML pages. If the script runs, but does not find a cookie,ask the visitor if they would like a personalized visit about thesite. If no, forget it. If yes, get the information, save it,and use it. And finally, given a read of a cookie, personalizeas possible.

Will Bontrager , a top flightprogrammer, sees no problem in accomplishing the above. Further,he has a plan for holding costs down. Use a standard databasewith all possible fields, all of which will not be needed by agiven site. By holding to a standard format, the great expenseof a customized database installation is avoided. While Will did not put a price on it, a few hundred dollars might be ample.

With the database in place, JavaScript can handle a vastarray of personalization functions. If you don’t want to getinto writing this kind of code, libraries and code generatorswill provide you with workable code that can be cut and pastedinto your pages. And, of course, there are people like Will, who will produce precisely what you need.

It’s Past Time To Be Thinking

I ignored early announcements of CRM because there did notseem to be much of value to a small business. Which is the areain which I and my clients work.

I see now, though, that there are some things that can bedone in a simple, straightforward way. So long as we do notreject any visitor for lack of the latest tools, we can make the visit to our site more personal and more enjoyable for many.

in an occupation for money. Does this mean that by just
engaging in a profession you are a professional? Of
course not. To be considered a professional you not only
need to have a great deal of knowledge and experience in
your chosen field, but you must also conduct business in
a professional manner.

To develop a professional image requires time and effort.
Let’s take a look at the areas of your business where you
should show professionalism.

* Communications *

Your attitude can make or break you. The way you deal
with clients, associates, suppliers, other business people,
questions, requests, complaints, and all other types of
business communications will highly reflect on your own
professional image. In all communications you should
consider this before responding.

Always be courteous. Be well mannered, respectful and
warm. Say, “thank you”, “please”, “You’re welcome”
whenever appropriate. Make sure you let people know
that you appreciate their time and effort —- don’t
forget to include letting your clients know that you
appreciate their business.

Never misrepresent yourself or your products/services.
Your honesty with clients and associates will go along
way. Remember that you must earn their trust — you
cannot do that if you are not honest to a fault. Being
honest will gain you life-long relationships with your
clients and associates.

* Products & Customer Relations *

Always deliver more than was expected. Make sure your
clients receive even more value than they anticipated.
If you don’t they will most probably be disappointed
with you and will not become a repeat customer. Repeat
customers are more important than the sale. A repeat
customer will buy more of your products and will praise
your products to others that may buy from you as well.

Always listen to your customers. They will tell you
where you need to improve things. Be sure to let them
know that you understand and that you value their opinions.
Try to look at a customer complaint as a way to learn
how to increase the value of your products and services.

Make yourself totally available to your clients and
customers. Supply them the type of support that you
want when you have a problem with something you have
purchased. Waste no time responding to your clients.
Be certain to find an agreeable solution as quickly as
possible and let your clients know that their satisfaction
is your highest priority.

When a client or customer is totally dissatisfied with
your product or service refund their money with a smile.
Tell them you are sorry and that you would like to know
exactly why they weren’t satisfied. Keep in mind that…
“the customer is always right” even if you don’t agree.

* Online Aspects *

Your Website should look professionally designed, include
complete product & service descriptions and an easy yet
secure way to order online. You should include complete
contact information (including your phone number) on
every page of your website — or at least a link to it.

Be polite and courteous to other website owners. Always
acknowledge others legitimate business (not spam) requests,
even if you are not interested.

In doing business, on the Internet or in the real world

You need to start with a small step. You need to educate yourself
about the ins and outs of doing a business before you do anything else.

Since you’ve reading this information, I figure you want to be
an entrepreneur. Right?

Wrong! From the very moment you start thinking about your
business start-up you ARE an entrepreneur! You must think as
if you already have your business up and running.

How do you get started? Well, I can tell you a little bit about it in
this article.

First and foremost, I want to walk you through
the very important process of building your vision. Any business,
whatever it may be, starts with someone, somewhere, having a
vision. That is what started KFC, Coca Cola and McDoanld’s.
And now you’re in that process, right now, because you’re
reading these lines.

When I started my business I made one big mistake and I
realized later that many business owners commit that same one
at the start-up. So what is it?

I planned and chose my business on the basis of income
potential, on the basis of money.

Why is it a mistake? After all, we all do business for the very
same reason: to make money. So how could planning it on that basis
be a mistake?

The reason is simple. Money is a concept. If we all want
money it is because of what we know it can provide for you. But in
itself money isn’t worth my time or yours. Not even $4,000 a day!!

What is worth the time investment when we put our business in the
start-up mode
is what we plan to do with all that hard earned cash piling up in our
bank
account.

So the first thing is you’ll have to ask yourself why you want
to start a business in the first place. What are your personal
goals in terms of lifestyle?

The first reason I hear from people looking to start their own
business is: “I want to leave the rat race, I don’t want to work
for someone, I want to stop working from 9 to 5 five or six days
a week and most of all I want to quit that job I don’t like!”

Does that sound like your situation? I guess that this is at least part
of your thinking.

But while this is better than thinking “I want to make tons of money”,
it’s not enough. It is a good start, but you need to work this out a
bit
more so you can have a clear picture of what you want to
achieve.

In order to do, this you’ll have to visualize the lifestyle you
want. As an example, each and every day when I wake up in the
morning I spend half an hour to a full hour fixated on a blank wall.
And I look at it as if there was a movie projected on that flat
blank wall. The movie I see is what I want.

I picture myself in a clear and definite situation. This way I’d
see myself working with people I enjoy and who appreciate me
and what I do for them. I would see myself spending quality time
with my girlfriend at a fine restaurant. I’d see myself enjoying,
tasting and living my life without any income, debt and work
worries. I do this every single day.

Once I stop I’d give myself 15 minutes everyday to write
everything down, what I saw and what I dreamed of.

I write all this in a positive and accountable manner. To give you
an example of what your life could be let me show what a goal would
be for someone who answered yes to my first example.

“I want to quit that job I don’t like”

would become:

“I want to start my own business in the fishing industry.
Fishing is my primary hobby for 10 years and I know a great
deal about it. Many will be interested in what I have to offer.
And I want this business to provide me a comfortable living
by the 30th of September 2000.”

“I want to stop working from 9 to 5, five or six days a week.”

Would become:

“I want to spend most of my time enjoying myself and playing
with my kids and for that matter I want to dedicate no more than
4 to 5 hours a day 4 days a week with that fishing business.”

I guess you get the point.

What you write must be:

1. Affirmative. You must write it in a clear positive manner.

2. Goal oriented. Your statements must define what you are
expecting from life. You must make them clear on what you want
and when you want it.

Once you start doing this exercise on a regular basis, your goals
becomes clear and it acts as a motivation for your business.

This is not a flimsy psych up, it is a deep introspection on what
you are really expecting from life and on what is truly important
to you. Once you start seeing that movie on the blank wall you
not only define what you want. You live it! It will become so
true that you’ll want to live that every day for a full day. And
this time you’ll want to live it for real.

Do this exercise for the next three days. Take one hour a day to
imagine and discover what you really want and how you want it
to be. Write it down as I showed you. Then you are ready to
develop your business further.

FALURE! Nobody wants to think about the unthinkable.
However, if many failed business owners would have

Running a business is quite like growing vegetables.
