Years ago, some one in the car industry had a stroke of genius. They came up with an idea of engraving their name on each and every car that comes out of their factories. This small idea has generated free publicity worth millions of dollars for these car companies over the years.

M.K. tried to adapt the car company’s’ idea for his business. M.K. was a general contractor. He used to go to houses and fix them up. He could handle everything from fixing tables to installing electrical lines to plumbing work. M.K. thought why should he advertise General motors instead of his own company? So he bought a customized magnetic sign for $45.95 and stuck it on his truck.

Advertising it is the simple answer and there are lots of places to do it but to be honest this is less than half the battle.

In the same way that clutter and mess will put off any potential house buyer , a dirty, clutter filled car will have potential new owners running for the hills.

1.De Clutter

4.Smells

If you are a smoker, empty out the ashtrays and wash them. If you are a pet owner and Fido loves to sit in the car with you then make sure you remove all the pet hair from the seats. Use an airfreshner.

5.Engine

Buying a car can be quite daunting. With so many makes, models and finance options available and other decisions, it can be difficult to find the deal that leaves you 100% happy.
However, the following pointers should help you make an educated decision when buying a new or used car.
Where to buy?

There are number of ways to buy a new or used car – a car dealership isn’t your only option. For example, there are independent dealers, importers, brokers, auction, online, car supermarkets or privately.

Here we weigh up the pros and cons of each of them:

Car and Independent Dealers
Using a dealer to buy your new or used car can be convenient as you can have a test drive and the salesman should be more versed in the car details as compared to say buying a car from a broker, or by buying a car online.

Dealers will offer deals such as free insurance or low-rate finance. January – traditionally a very slow month for car dealers who offer extra specials incentives to try and get your custom – is also a time where you may be able to snap up a bargain.

Most new cars come with a two or three warranty (most with breakdown cover included as well for the same period).

If you have a car to part exchange, the car dealer will normally take it as part of a deposit, which means it is off your hands without the hassle of trying to sell it privately. However, do bear in mind that you will not get full the market value for it.

However, the downside of buying from a car dealership is that their prices can be higher than elsewhere as they need to cover the cost of the showroom and staff.

And, if there aren’t any finance incentives at the dealership, choosing their finance scheme will be, in most cases, expensive.

Importers
If you a buy a car in from Europe, you do stand to save money, though in some cases, UK deals are increasingly competitive. Lower prices over here and exchange rate fluctuations mean imports aren’t quite the outstanding bargains they used to be.

Brokers
A broker is an intermediary who negotiates with a dealer on your behalf to get you a cut-price car. Car brokers use their bulk –buying power to secure discounts which they then pass on to the customer (after they’ve taken their cut of course!)

Auction
You can be sure of snapping up a bargain if you buy at auction, but it is best if you visit a few auctions before taking the plunge. Visit and learn the ropes or take a knowledgeable friend. With Auctions, you will get more legal protection at an auction than buying privately.

Car Supermarkets
Car Supermarkets offer a huge choice at competitive prices. However, there is little room for negotiation and you may get a low bid for your part-exchange and limited pre-sales checks.

Some car supermarkets also charge you extra for a warranty (if the maker’s cover has expired), a history check and road tax.

Online
This process is all carried out online. You can visit a manufacturer’s website or a specialist online car broker such as JamJar. Everything can be completed online – finding and choosing of the car, the specification options, finance options, delivery details, and, in some cases even part exchanges.

The disadvantage to this service that you can not test drive the car.

Privately
Buying privately is a risky way to get a car as you have very little legal protection should anything go wrong. Many dealers masquerade as private sellers to duck their legal responsibilities, so always check that the log book details match up.

Always take someone who knows about cars along with you and always view any private car in broad daylight when any dinks, dents and damage are visible!

Financing your new car

Once you’ve decided where to buy your next car, you need to think about finance.

Very few of us buy a car with cash, and borrowing money is the only option. However, there are so many different types of finance to choose from, it can be difficult knowing which is the right one for you.

Hire Purchase (HP)
HP is where a deposit is followed by regular monthly repayment. However, the car is owned by the finance company until the loan is repaid. So, if you fail to maintain the finance payments you could lose the vehicle.

Hire Purchase is fairly easy to obtain and widely available, and with it you also get additional protection under the Consumer Credit Act

Personal Loan (as opposed to Manufacturer’s finance)
A personal loan is probably the cheapest way to buy a new or used car as personal loan providers tend to offer lower interest rates than traditional other car financing methods. Also, as you are classed as a ‘cash purchaser’ (because you already have the finance in place) you are in a strong position to negotiate a good deal.

As the loan will not be secured on the vehicle, the car is owned outright by you.

Manufacturers schemes
These are offered by manufacturers, dealers, finance companies and some banks for the purchase of new or nearly new cars.
More often than not, you will be paying interest at a higher interest rate than that offered on a personal loan.
With manufacturers schemes, you can part exchange your own vehicle and may also need to make a deposit. You will then have a finance agreement for the remainder of the cost of the vehicle. As with HP, if you do fail to keep up the repayments on the vehicle, it may be repossessed.

Personal Contract Purchase (PCP)
PCP schemes available from car dealers as well as banks. You pay a small deposit and a set amount of monthly payments. When the contract ends, you have three options:

• you can hand the car back and owe nothing,
• you can pay the balance (which, in any contract you sign, will be stated as the Minimum Guaranteed Future Value) and keep the car,
• you can trade it in for another, and begin a new PCP.

PCPs are best for people who like a new car every two or three years. If you are looking to keep a car long term, then personal or hire-purchase loans will be cheaper.

…. from a car dealer or broker

• Do your research first – get a good idea of what car you want and how much you are prepared for pay for it and stick to the price
• When the salesman asks you what your budget is, always come in at least £500 under what you are really prepared to pay. Salesmen will always add £500 on top of your budget because by the time you are sitting down and talking about figures with him or her, it is obvious you really want the car and will find a way to finance the ‘extra’ £500
• If you are part exchanging your vehicle, check out it’s value somewhere like Parkers Price guide. While you will never get 100% market value on your p/x from a dealer, at least you have a rough figure as to what it should be.
• Always be confident, polite, but firm. You are likely to get a better deal if you come across as someone who won’t be messed about with!
• Consider buying an ex-demo. These are normally no older than three months’ old, but you can expect to get up to 15% off the new price!

….. privately
• Always take someone with you to give a second opinion – two pairs of eyes are better than one and go during broad daylight so that any scrapes or dents will show up
• Always meet the seller at their house so you can check they are genuine and that all documentation tallies up
• Test drive the car and listen out for any noises, as well to check that there are no ‘blind spots’ and that the car feels comfortable
• If you feel the car is right for you, arrange to have an independent survey carried out by one of the motoring organisations. This will highlight any flaws or potential problems.

So, the car looks great, you can picture yourself in it .. and now, the most important part – it is time for a test drive.

Don’t dismiss the test drive as just part of the sales process, taking a test drive is the most important part of buying a car. Yet so many people dismiss it as formality!

And if you don’t believe me, I (embarrassingly!) write from experience! The car that I’d lusted over, that ‘dream’ car that I’d so avidly researched, I sat in it in the car dealers, fell in love and signed up on the dotted line (without taking a test drive – I didn’t feel I needed to)!

Sadly, my ‘dream’ car, that I used for a 60 mile round trip twice a day for the next three years had a blind spot! The day I part exchanged that car, I test drove every possible replacement for my ‘dream-turned-nightmare’ car!

So, how do you get the most from your test drive?

First of, if you are refused a drive, don’t buy the car. Do you want to be stuck with a car that you are not comfortable in; one where the seat is too low and gives you backache? One that has a blind spot?!

The ideal road test should ideally be at least five miles to give you a chance to experience different speeds and road types and for the mechanics to warm up properly.

What to check
When test driving from a car dealership, most do have their own insurance – but do double check!

If buying privately, check on your own policy that you are insured and check that the car you are looking to buy has an MOT and up-to-date road tax.

Check the condition of the car – look for any dinks, dents, scratches. Look at the condition of the tyres and look under the bonnet. (It is always best – wherever you are buying a car from – to have someone who knows a bit about them to come with you and give you a second opinion).

First of all, watch the current owner drive the car – this will give you a feel for how the car is treated. For example, someone who ‘rides’ the clutch means that if you do buy the car, you may have to fork out for a new clutch soon.

Listen for unusual noises and knocking and then, it’s your turn! When driving ….
• Gears – a very high biting point suggests a worn clutch
• Check the steering – for a slack response and that the wheel doesn’t ‘kick’ in your hands.
• For car with power steering, gently turn the steering from lock to lock and listen to see if the pump audibly complains
• When braking, the car should pull up in a straight line and without any judders
• Listen for mechanical noises, any clunks, unusual sounds that you may not have picked up when you were a passenger. eg. The engine shouldn’t sound rough
• Look around the interior – look for dirty or torn seats; cracked speaker covers, check the boot etc

Another important consideration is running costs:

• What insurance group is the car? The higher the group, the more your insurance premium will be
• If your car is going to do a lot of mileage (over 12,000 miles a year), then think about choosing a car with a diesel engine – these are better on fuel consumption
• More expensive cars will have higher servicing and maintenance bills

Comfort
Depending on what purpose your car is used for, comfort is a consideration.

For commuting or high mileage vehicles, the car should be of the optimum comfort and, ideally, have air conditioning.

If it is a fun car, say a sporty number for weekends, then be prepared that the ride will be slightly harder (but a lot of fun!)

Many years ago when I got hooked by motorcycles I started to hear about the two and four stroke engines… It seemed there were (and there still are) strong opinions in pro and con of each of the engine types.

As Internet wasn’t available, and as I was worried about other aspects or motorcycle riding in that time, I left that question unanswered for a long time.

Here are some facts about two and four stroke engines:

TWO STROKE ENGINES

Cycle – Two Strokes:

1.- Compression (intake+compression)
2.- Combustion (combustion+exhaust)

Advantages of two stroke engines:

• The engine fires – spark plug ignites – once every revolution of the crankshaft.
• They produce twice the power than four stroke engines.
• They are much simpler than four stroke engines. Fewer parts to worry about.

Disadvantages:

• You have to mix two stroke engine oil with gas, and depending on your consumption, this might be expensive.
• They last less. Lubrication is not as efficient as in a four stroke engine with heavy oil.
• Do not use gas efficiently.
• Pollute more.

FOUR STROKE ENGINES

Cycle – Four Strokes:

1.- Intake
2.- Compression
3.- Combustion
4.- Exhaust

If a police patrol car pulls up behind you with lights flashing, the key to the next few minutes is keeping things safe for you and the police officer. Slow down and carefully pull over to the right shoulder, making sure to use your turn signal.

If you are uncomfortable stopping in a relatively unpopulated or unlighted area, slow down, turn on your hazard lights and indicate by a hand signal that you are going up ahead. Then pull over as soon as you get to a more populated area. Police officers understand this concern.

If it’s nighttime, turn on your dome light once you have stopped. Stay in the car, unless you are told to get out. It’s a challenge to the officer when you get out since officers are very cautious because of the high rate of attacks in these situations.

Roll down the window and keep your hands in view on the steering wheel. If you have to get your driver’s license, registration or insurance card from the glove box, a purse or other enclosed area, tell the officer before you do it.

The key is to play it cool and keep it safe. The easier and safer you make the process for the officer to approach you the more likely the officer will let you go just with a warning and not assign you a speeding ticket.

Now what to say to the police officer?

Of course the process of keeping it safe for the officer is only half of the game. Next you have to persuade officer to let you go with a warning.

The first thing the police officer will ask you after stopping your car will probably be whether you know why you have been stopped.

Police officer will want you to admit that you were speeding and that is what most drivers do – they admit that they did actually speed and they receive a speeding ticket for it. A speeding ticket not only costs them $150 but you are also dealing with your insurance premiums.

Most people get pretty nervous when they got stopped by an officer. The secret is to stay calm, speak to the officer in respectable tone and politely ask whether the officer can let you go with a warning.

The first question the officer will probably ask is whether you know why you have been stopped. You basically have 3 things to say:

1) Admit that you were speeding. The good side is that you are being honest and the officer appreciates it. You may have a chance that the officer will let you go with a warning.

The bad side is that if you get assigned a ticket and you had admitted that you were indeed speeding then it will be used against you at court. Officers usually take notes on what you say. So if you feel that you will get assigned a speeding ticket then you really shouldn’t directly admit that you were speeding.

2) Deny that you were speeding. This approach usually creates tension between you and the police officer. If you don’t have a reasonable argument to convince the officer that you weren’t speeding then you will get assigned a ticket.

The good side for this approach is that you will have more chance to beating your speeding ticket at court, since you didn’t admit that you were speeding.

3) Don’t admit that you were speeding but neither deny it. This approach may actually be the best one.
